Is it Selfish to Put Yourself First?

The idea of putting yourself first is a very uncomfortable idea for many; usually because it is linked to the belief that, to do so, is to be selfish. I wanted to clarify a few things around this topic though!

  1. To put yourself first and ask everyone else to put you first is, in fact, quite a selfish act. This isn’t what the healing world tends to mean when we say put yourself first, what is actually meant is put yourself first and acknowledge/support everybody else’s need to put themselves first. That is to say champion all those around you at the same time, even if them putting themselves first isn’t in your immediate interests. Everybody benefits from a society of well resourced and well rested people!

  2. Your are not a finite resource, we assume putting yourself first means there is less energy available to support others. When in all honesty I have found the complete opposite to be true, the more focus I have put on taking care of myself, establishing boundaries and learning to say no, the more I have shown up for others. Not only that but I am far kinder, gentler and level headed when dealing with others.

  3. Recognising that putting yourself first means you are finally taking ultimate responsibility for yourself from here on out. If your mission is to prioritise your wellness it is no longer possible to put the blame on others doorsteps when life isn’t going in the direction you want it to.
